Golf Trolley Batteries – Care and Maintenance Tips

Electric golf trolley battery life depends on the number of golf rounds played and a host of other factors. Those factors include 1) the number of times the battery is charged, 2) frequency between charges, 3) duration of charge, 4) amount of charge drainage, 5) amount of battery idle time, 6) battery storage conditions and 7) duration of overall shelf time. Following is some information about factors affecting battery life and tips about taking better care of your golf trolley battery.

General Information about Golf Trolley Batteries

  • Golf Trolleys use what are called “deep-cycle” batteries
  • Normal life of a lead-acid battery is 150 to 250 charging cycles (~ 150 – 250 rounds of golf).
  • Normal life of a lithium golf trolley battery ranges from 400 to as much as 1000 charging cycles
  • When discharged it can take about 8 to 12 hours to fully charge a battery.
  • The battery and charger that came with your trolley are unique. They should not be replaced with batteries/chargers regularly available in retail stores as these could have limited life.
  • Using incompatible batteries/chargers could damage your electric trolley & void the warranty.
  • Recommendation - Contact a factory service rep. before trying to replace a battery or charger.
  • Battery Poles: Red is positive; Black is negative. In case of replacement, reconnect the battery poles battery correctly; otherwise your trolley could suffer severe damage.

Safety Precautions:

  • Don’t disassemble the battery – SAFETY HAZARD!
  • Don’t throw battery into a fire - POTENTIAL EXPLOSION!
  • Don’t touch the electric poles of the battery - SAFETY HAZARD!
  • Charge the battery in a well ventilated area
  • Don’t charge the battery in a sealed container or in upside down position.
  • Don’t charge the battery near a heater, or where heat accumulation may occur.

Tips on New Batteries:

  • Before the first use of your battery, put it on charge for 12 to 24 hours to "activate" it.
  • New Lead-Acid batteries take 2-3 rounds and charging cycles before reaching full operating potential.
  • Lithium batteries are at full potential after the first full charge.

Tips on Battery Charging and Maintenance:
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions -- most recommend the following procedures:

  • Connect battery cable plug with charger, then plug the charger into an outlet. During charging cycle the LED on the charger will show red or blinking green. When charging is complete the light will be a steady green. Now it's okay to unplug the charger and use the battery.
  • Fully charge the battery before the first use
  • Do not leave the battery on the charger. Disconnect the charger when battery is charged.
  • Recharge your battery as soon as possible after 18 holes.
  • Do not fully discharge the battery by “overplaying” it, as this could shorten battery life.
  • Don’t keep your battery connected to the power outlet during prolonged power outages.
  • Don’t store the battery in the car trunk or other high-temperature areas.

Tips on Storing a Golf Trolley Battery for the “Off Season”:

Lead-Acid Batteries in Storage:

  • Make sure the battery is fully charged before storing.
  • Remove the battery from the charger. Disconnect charger from the power supply.
  • Store in a cool dry place. Ideal is about 60 degrees F; 40 to 80 degrees F should be OK.
  • Store the battery so that air can get around all sides and the top.
  • “Top off” the charge periodically (about every 4 to 6 weeks should be OK).

Lithium Batteries in Storage:
.
  • Put a "half-charge" on the battery before storing.
  • To achieve ½-charge state, use the battery for a normal (18-hole) round, then charge 1½-2 hours.
  • Remove the battery from the charger. Disconnect charger from the power supply.
  • Store in a cool dry place. Ideal is about 60 degrees F; 40 to 80 degrees F should be OK.
  • Store the battery so that air can get around all sides and the top.
  • There is no need to recharge a lithium battery during the storage period.
  • Simply charge it fully when ready to resume using it.

Best Wishes for Great Golfing!
